We've been taught that "antibacterial" means better, that more lather means cleaner, that the harsher the product the more effective it is. But harshness isn't effectiveness — it's damage. Most commercial hand washes are built around industrial detergents, the same chemicals used in dish soap and laundry detergent. And the "antibacterial" claims are often driven by triclosan, which contributes to antibiotic resistance and disrupts hormones.

If you wash your hands frequently, you've probably experienced dry, tight, cracked skin. That isn't normal — it's a sign the product is stripping your skin's natural oils.

Rustic Art Organic Aloe Vera Rosemary Hand Wash is one of my all-time favorites. Refreshing, mild, with a clean fragrance. A small amount is enough, and it doesn't leave your hands dry, tight or pulled.

The most economical and sustainable option. One 500g concentrate creates 1.5–2 litres of liquid hand wash — the equivalent of six to eight regular bottles.

1. Take one-third of the concentrate (about 166g).
2. Add twice the amount of water (about 330ml).
3. Mix well and transfer to your 250ml bottle.
4. Use as you would any liquid hand wash.

My approach: I dilute one-third of the 500ml concentrate with twice the water. That fills the 250ml bottle twice. When it runs out, I mix another third and keep it ready — so I'm never without hand wash.

Choosing a gentle, plant-based hand wash is about protecting your skin's natural moisture barrier and making a choice that's kind to your body.
